The dreaded 'root canal.' Over the years, the term has become a comic descriptive associated witha number of things that cause dread or pain(i.e. "I'd rather have a root canal than go to my in-laws!").

For those in need of a root canal, however, it's no laughing matter. Fortunately, modern techniques and advanced skills offer today's patients a much higher level of comfort and a more efficient treatment process than those associated with past ridicule.

What is a root canal?

The procedure is performed to remove bacteria and dying or dead tissue from inside the tooth.

What symptoms show I need a root canal?
  • Pain that seems to originate from a tooth's root. This may occur or worsen while eating or drinking.
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages.
  • Swollen gum tissues around a tooth that seems to come from beneath the surface.
What does a root canal do?

A root canal cleans an infection that lies deep within the tooth. This occurs when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected with bacteria, often the result of an injury or a cavity. Without treatment, the infection can become so severe that tooth removal will be necessary.

Saving a natural tooth not only helps you avoid the decisions and costs associated with replacement, you preserve precious tooth roots. Your tooth's roots help to stimulate and nourish the jaw bone that supports them. Without these roots, the jaw begins to shrink, or 'resorb.'

The process of resorption can lead to problems, including greater risk to neighboring teeth and changes in facial appearance.

"As a victim of severe tetracycline stains and grinding I was a late forties person who didn't smile in pictures. I finally bit the bullet and made the investment in myself. I got 8 veneer/crown combinations on the top. I now have a beautiful smile.

What Dr. Rich was able to do for me was a miracle. My new smile is absolutely natural.... What I was supposed to be the whole time. I tell everyone "Dr. Rich is a true artist."

"I have been a patient of Dr. Rich's for almost 20 years. He is a wonderful dentist! He has made me happy with my smile and I am very picky. My bonding has lasted a very long time and looks natural. I would not trust anyone else with my smile!"
