By keeping your oral health in optimal condition, you may help prevent coronary artery disease or even stroke. Research has shown links between the bacteria in gum disease and heart disease, stroke, diabetes, memory loss, and even preterm low birth weight babies.

Preventive Care

ONGOING CARE TO MINIMIZE OR PREVENT PROBLEMS - Oral wellness creates smiles that last a lifetime.

To protect your smile and avoid costly repairs, thorough examination, careful cleaning, and home care instruction are incorporated into your regular care visits. If risk factors are present, a customized treatment program will be developed to help restore your mouth to a healthy state.

For a smile that looks as good as it feels, hygiene appointments include:

Dr. Rich offers a simple DNA test using saliva to determine the specific type and quantity of disease-causing bacteria to your mouth. These tests are for anyone with or without symptoms of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Symptoms include bleeding gums, bad breath, or red and tender gums. Other indications for this test are pretreatment clearance for extensive dental procedures and pre-surgical clearance for heart surgery, joint replacements, etc.

A genetic susceptibility test is also available, called MyPerioID PST® that reveals if your genetic makeup puts you at greater risk for developing gum tissue infections. This test gives better insight into how one's immune system will respond to the presence of harmful bacteria.

The tests are performed by swishing a small amount of saline in the mouth and the saliva sample is sent to OralDNA Labs for processing. The lab report identifies harmful bacteria associated with gum infections. This helps Dr. Rich develop a more effective treatment plan, enabling them to treat the source of the infection rather than just the symptoms. The therapy reduces one's bacterial risk for disease progression. As with most diseases, earlier and more targeted treatment can help stop periodontal disease before irreversible damage occurs.

An estimated 75% of Americans over age 35 have some form of periodontal disease. Research has shown the Perio / Systemic connection and the link between chronic periodontal infections and heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and some forms of cancer.

Periodontal Therapy (Gum treatment)

Sore, bleeding gums indicate the beginning of Periodontal Disease. If left untreated, discomfort, bad breath, and eventual tooth loss will result. Extensive research has detected a link between gum disease and heart disease, premature babies, stroke, and diabetes. If indication of gum disease exists, Dr. Rich offers non-surgical treatment for various stages of gum disease.
